How much to charge for handyman work in 2026

Home / Guides

The hourly rate a one-truck handyman needs to charge, built from what handymen and remodelers actually earn, a price list for 14 common jobs with the arithmetic shown, what moves the number, and the mistakes that cost the most.

Short answer: a one-truck handyman business that pays its owner what the median maintenance and repair worker earns, carries normal overhead, and keeps a 20 percent margin needs about $70 an hour. To pay yourself like the top quarter of handymen and remodelers, charge about $80. Top ten percent, $90. Below $60 you are subsidizing the customer with your own wages. Every number on this page is built from published wage data and a model you can see, and the price list further down uses the $80 rate.

Handyman pricing is harder than any single trade because the job list has no bottom and no top: a doorknob at 9 am, a bathroom fan at 11, a deck board after lunch, and a customer at 3 who wants a quote on a whole bathroom. The wage the BLS tracks for general maintenance and repair workers is the honest floor, and a self-employed handyman who is good at ten things should price above it, not at it, because the customer is paying for not having to call four different people.

Two things set handyman rates apart. First, the small job is the enemy of the hourly rate: a 45-minute job still costs a drive, a quote, an invoice and a follow-up, so a minimum charge is not greed, it is survival. Second, licensing lines move the market. In states where anything over a few hundred dollars needs a contractor's license, legal handymen price higher and turn down the big jobs, and the bid should say what you are licensed to do.

What handymen and remodelers earn, and what that means for your rate

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 1,529,700 people working as maintenance and repair workers, general in its May 2025 survey and published what they are paid. That is the wage an employer pays an employee, which is the floor for what an owner-operator should pay themselves. A rate is built on top of it: the hidden cost of an hour of labor, the overhead of running a truck, the hours you cannot bill, and a margin. The model here uses a 22% labor load for payroll taxes, workers comp and the liability share, $28,000 a year of overhead for the truck, insurance, phone, software, tools and licenses, 1,100 billable hours a year, and a 20% margin. Change any input and the rate moves; the hourly rate calculator runs it with your numbers.

If you pay yourself like theBLS wageLoadedOverhead per hourRate to charge
Bottom quarter$20$24$25$60
Median$24$29$25$70
Top quarter$30$37$25$80
Top ten percent$37$45$25$90

Rate = (wage × 1.22 + $28,000 ÷ 1,100) ÷ (1 − 0.2), rounded to $5. Wages: BLS OEWS May 2025, maintenance and repair workers, general, national.

Overhead of $28,000 is a truck, tools that cover a dozen trades, liability insurance and the parts and fasteners you carry. Published 2026 guides put self-employed handymen at $50 to $80 an hour and licensed, insured operators at $70 to $125, which agrees with the top two rows of the table. A minimum charge, usually one to two hours, is standard.

A handyman price list, with the math

Flat prices for the jobs handymen and remodelers quote most, built the same way every time: hours at the $80 rate, plus materials at cost with a 30 percent markup, rounded to $5. The hours and material costs are example inputs for a typical job in a typical market, stated so you can swap in your own. A job with a crew of two doubles the labor line. Prices assume one person, standard materials, and a customer who has the fixture or part on site when they supply it. Jobs over a half day are better priced as a scoped job than from this list.

Price = hours × $80 + materials × 1.3. Trip or diagnostic fees, permits and disposal are extra lines.

This is a sample. The free price book builder prices the full handyman book, 51 jobs, with your own wage, overhead and margin, and gives you the PDF for the truck and the spreadsheet that keeps the formulas.

What moves the price

  • The minimum. One to two hours, charged even when the fix takes twenty minutes. The customer is paying for you to arrive with the right tool, which is the whole service.
  • Bundling. A list of six small jobs in one visit is where a handyman makes money. Price the list as a half day or a day, and tell customers that is the best deal they will get from you.
  • Supplied parts. If the customer supplies the faucet or the fan, no markup, but no warranty on the part and a line that says so. If you supply it, mark it up 25 to 40 percent for the shopping trip and the return risk.
  • Licensing. Know your state's dollar limit and the trades that are always licensed, usually plumbing past a fixture swap, electrical past a device, and gas. Write what you do and do not do.
  • Surprises. The faucet whose shutoffs do not shut, the fan whose box is not fan-rated. Say on the bid that work outside the scope is priced before it is done.

Hourly, flat rate, or by the unit

Flat rate for the twenty jobs you do every week, from a one-page price list: faucet, toilet, fan, TV, door, patch. Customers call three handymen and the one with a firm number wins. Build each price from your hours at your rate so the list stays honest as your rate changes.

Hourly with a minimum for everything else, especially punch lists and "while you are here." Half-day and full-day rates for lists longer than three items. A scoped job price for anything over a day, written like a contractor's bid with a deposit.

A worked handyman bid

A customer's list: mount a TV, replace a bathroom faucet, patch two nail-pop spots, and rehang a closet door that drags. From the list: 1.5 plus 1.5 plus 2 plus 1 hours, six hours, a comfortable day with the drive. At the top-quarter rate from the table that is one labor line. Materials: a mount the customer bought, a faucet they bought, $20 of patch and fasteners marked up. One price for the day, the four items written as scope lines, due on completion.

That is the bid that wins against the handyman who said "probably a few hundred, depends." The sample handyman estimate shows a finished punch-list bid.

The pricing mistakes that cost the most

  • No minimum charge, so a $60 doorknob visit eats a $200 morning.
  • Hourly pricing on jobs you have done a hundred times. The customer pays for your speed instead of you keeping it.
  • Shopping for parts on your own time. The trip to the store is billable or the markup covers it. One or the other, never neither.
  • Taking the $4,000 bathroom in a state where the handyman limit is $500. The unlicensed job is the one with no recourse when the customer does not pay.

Writing the price into a bid that gets signed

The number is half the job. The other half is a bid the customer can say yes to from their phone: the scope in lines, one price, the deposit and payment terms, the warranty, a date it expires, and a signature. The free handyman estimate template is laid out that way in PDF, Word and Excel, and How to bid handyman jobs covers the scope lines that keep you out of arguments. If you want the typing done for you, BidWriter Pro turns your notes into a clean bid your customer signs on their phone, with the deposit paid by card. $29 a month, 30 days free.

Questions contractors ask

How much do handymen charge per hour in 2026?

Published guides put self-employed handymen at $50 to $80 an hour and licensed, insured operators at $70 to $125. Built from BLS wages, a one-truck handyman paying themselves the median wage needs about $70 an hour and $80 to earn like the top quarter of the trade.

What should a handyman minimum charge be?

One to two hours at your rate, charged whether the job takes twenty minutes or two hours. It covers the trip, the tools and the time you could have billed elsewhere.

Should a handyman charge hourly or flat rate?

Flat rate for the jobs you do every week, from a short price list. Hourly with a minimum for punch lists and anything open-ended. A written job price for anything over a day.

How much should I charge to mount a TV?

About an hour and a half with a customer-supplied mount, commonly $100 to $250 depending on size, wall and whether wires are hidden in the wall.

How much can a handyman legally charge without a license?

It depends on the state, from no limit to a few hundred dollars per job, and plumbing, electrical and gas work beyond simple swaps usually need a trade license regardless. Check your state board and write what you are licensed to do on your bid.
