How to bid gutter jobs
What a gutter bid has to say, a worked seamless gutter price by the foot, the fascia line that saves the renegotiation, and when a deposit makes sense on a one-day job.
Gutters are a per-foot trade with one surprise: the rotten fascia behind the old gutter. The bid that handles it has a per-foot price for fascia replacement on it before anyone climbs a ladder. The bid that does not stops the job on a Tuesday morning to renegotiate on the phone with a customer who is at work.
What a gutter bid has to answer
- Linear feet, size, and material: 160 feet of 5-inch seamless aluminum, .027 gauge, with the color named.
- Downspouts counted, by size, with extensions or splash blocks, and how many corners and end caps.
- Hangers: the type and the spacing. Hidden hangers every 24 inches is a line customers understand.
- Removal and disposal of the old gutters.
- Fascia and soffit: a per-foot price for rotten fascia found behind the old gutter, and that photos are sent before it is replaced.
How to price it
Example numbers for 160 feet of 5-inch seamless aluminum, six downspouts, old gutters removed, single story, in a typical market. Yours will differ.
- Material: coil, hangers, corners, end caps, outlets, downspouts, elbows, sealant, at cost plus markup, $620.
- Removal and disposal: $1.50 a foot, $240.
- Install labor: $5 to $9 a foot for seamless on a single story, run on site. At $6, $960.
- Downspouts: $60 to $90 each installed, on top of the foot price, $400.
- Fascia: $12 to $18 a linear foot, priced as a line, replaced as found with photos.
- Total: about $2,220 before any fascia. $2,150 to $2,600 is the usual range, moving with gauge, color, and the number of corners and stories.
Gutter guards price by the foot by product, and the bid should say what the guard does and does not keep out. Fascia and soffit replacement on its own prices by the foot with the material named.
Where gutter bids go wrong
- No fascia line. The crew found 30 feet of rot and had to stop and call.
- Downspouts were counted as gutter feet, and six of them ate the margin.
- The gauge and color were not written, and the customer compared it to a thinner, cheaper quote.
- The second story was priced like the first, and the day ran long on ladder work.

Deposit and payment terms
Most gutter jobs are one day, and many installers take nothing down and collect on completion. A deposit of a quarter to a third at signing makes sense when the coil is a special color, the job is two stories, or the fascia line is likely to be used. Collect on completion the same day, by card from the driveway if you can, so you are not invoicing a $2,000 job and waiting.
Getting more gutter jobs
Gutter customers get three bids and pick on the one that explains the job. The bid with the feet, the gauge, the hangers, the downspouts, and the fascia line is that bid. Measure from the ground, text it before you leave, and put guards on it as an option so the customer decides between two of yours. Follow up at three days. Ask for the review after the first rain, when they can see it work.

Questions contractors ask
How much should I charge per foot for seamless gutters?
Material at cost plus markup, removal of the old gutter per foot, install labor per foot, and downspouts each. Many markets land between $9 and $16 a linear foot installed for 5-inch aluminum on a single story, with corners, stories, and color moving it.
How do I handle rotten fascia on a gutter job?
A per-foot price on the bid, replaced as found, with photos sent before it is replaced. The line is what lets the crew keep working instead of calling.
Do gutter installers take a deposit?
Often not on a one-day job. A quarter to a third at signing when the color is special order or the job is two stories.
