A roofing unit of 100 square feet. A 20-square roof is 2,000 square feet of surface, measured on the slope.

Roofers price, order and talk in squares. The footprint of the house is not the number; the sloped surface is, which is the footprint times a pitch factor. Three bundles of standard shingles cover a square.

A bid that says "24 squares, two layers off" tells the customer the whole job in six words and makes it comparable to the next roofer's bid.
