Hardwood refinishing estimate example
Refinishing is the job customers are most nervous about. The bid calms them by saying what each day is.
"sand and refinish 1100 sq ft red oak, 3 rooms and hall, dustless sanding, fill gaps, 1 coat stain customer picks, 3 coats water based poly satin, customer out 4 days, furniture removed by customer, replace 1 damaged board in hall"
Example figures for a typical hardwood refinishing job. Not a quote. Every line on the estimate came from the notes above. Nothing was added.
What to spell out on a hardwood refinishing bid
- Wood species and the square footage.
- Stain and finish: product, sheen, coat count.
- Days the floor is unusable and whether they can stay in the house.
- Repairs by the board, named and counted.
A material deposit at signing covers the special order before you place it.
The parts of this estimate
- Scope of work. 5 lines, one thing each, in the order the work happens. What is not included is on the list too.
- One price. $4,950. Not a formula, not a range. The scope explains the number.
- Timeline. 5 days. Including dry time, cure time, or permit time, so the customer plans around it.
- Payment terms. 50% upfront, 50% on completion. The $2,475 deposit is paid by card when they sign.
- Warranty. 1 year on the finish.
- A way to accept. The customer types their name and signs with a finger on their phone. Legally binding under the E-SIGN Act, and recorded with the date, time, and the exact estimate they agreed to.
Questions flooring installers ask about this bid
Should I show stain samples before the bid?
Put on the bid that samples are applied on the floor before staining and the customer picks. It avoids the "that is not the color I meant" call.
Water or oil poly?
Name which, and why, on the bid. Water-based dries faster and stays clearer, which matters for the schedule line.
Is this a real quote?
No. The numbers are example figures for a typical job so you can see how a complete estimate reads. Your price is yours.
Can my customer sign this on their phone?
Yes. An estimate sent from BidWriter Pro opens as a link. The customer reads it, types their name, signs with a finger, and pays the deposit by card. You get an alert when they open it and when they sign.
