Margin
Profit as a percentage of the price, not of the cost. A $130 price on a $100 cost is a 23 percent margin.
Margin is the share of what the customer pays that you keep after the cost of what you sold them. It is the number an accountant or a lender asks for. Markup is the number you use to set the price. They describe the same dollars from two directions.
The trap: a contractor who wants a 30 percent margin and applies a 30 percent markup gets 23. To get a 30 percent margin you mark up about 43 percent.
